It’s a good job that Playershare has had its best season so far; the sudden spate of injuries led to an unprecedented call on our resources, as Sean needed to raid the loan market to patch up the squad. Not only that, of course, but we have been able to help with yet another permanent signing – this time James O’Connor.
The full list of those we have supported over the last few weeks is:
James O’Connor on loan for one month, and then signed permanently.
Matthew Mills on one month’s loan – since extended to two.
Adam Green on one month’s loan.
Frankie Simek on one month’s loan.
With a very small squad, it is almost inevitable that loan signings will have to be added – and usually in a very short space of time. Without Playershare, it is very doubtful that the football club would have been able to bring in fresh blood. There are, of course, very promising youth players on their way up, but it would be tough for them if they were given a “baptism of fire” in a play-off run-in. The most successful of our youth players over the last five years have all been introduced gently to the first team – and surely that has to be the right approach.
Playershare has really caught the imagination of the fans, but the fans shouldn’t take its help for granted – and the directors and shareholders shouldn’t be complacent. We still need to raise a bit more this season to cover the commitments we have already made – but there is no question that Playershare will deliver.
However, next season, we have to start all over again, and as is always the case, it’s a daunting prospect to raise somewhere between £75,000 and £100,000 from scratch. So please don’t forget to help by buying tickets for the raffle. Also Playerpledge will be back next season. This year we had around 50 members who made a useful combination to Playershare funds. Next year, let’s look to double this number at the very least. In fact 250 members has a nice round number feel about it!
