Sean must be hoping that bad things really don’t run in threes, but the sudden injury crisis that the club’s defenders have faced over the last couple of weeks has meant that the importance of Playershare has been highlighted yet again. The club operates a very tight playing budget through necessity, but that means any injury causes problems, but when one section of the side is hit by a series of injuries – no matter the duration – something has to be done to strengthen the playing resources quickly – or better still sooner.

With spare cash being at a premium in the club, money for the loan signings that are needed has to come from outside – and for the last two and a half seasons that has been one of the major functions of Playershare. The benefits of a stronger squad are obvious, but probably more important is the fact that Playershare being in the background allows the club to keep playing costs to an absolute minimum. Whichever way you look at it, Playershare is essential to AFC Bournemouth.

The situation was so urgent this time that the directors have – for the first time – anticipated that we will have the money before it is needed, rather than having all the money in the bank before we guarantee the resources to Sean. We have been able to do this because of four main factors:

We still have shareholder pledges outstanding; there has been no need to call for these until now – but now there is please!

The second round of Playerpledge statements will be winging their way to those who have joined the scheme. Please send the money pledged to Adrian Kelley as soon as possible.

The Playershare raffle is a regular and important source of funds; please make sure you give as much as you regularly do – Playershare is relying on you more than ever.

Whenever there is a specific need for funds (e.g. Eddieshare or the arrival of John Spicer) the shareholders (new and existing) always come up trumps.

The directors have taken a calculated risk; don’t prove our calculations were too optimistic – prove they were too pessimistic!!!
