Neil Moss would have to be one of the best goalkeepers in the lower leagues
with his background, and he is always a rock between the sticks for Bournemouth.
He started his career with Bournemouth back in 1993 when he signed a professional
contract at the club, and he went on to make 29 appearances before being
snapped up by Southampton in 1995 for £250,000.
Moss spent eight years in the Premiership with the Saints, but despite his
great talent he only made twenty five appearances. When called up Moss did
a good job for Southampton, and he also impressed during a loan spell at
Gillingham. Cherries fans always hoped that Moss would return to Dean Court,
but it was a total surprise when he signed a loan deal with the club in September
2002. The Cherries had gone through goalkeepers Gareth Stewart, Jamie Ashdown
and Chris Tardif, so Moss was called upon to end the goalkeeping crisis which
even saw midfielder Marcus Browning appear between the sticks.
In his three months on loan Moss was a key player for Bournemouth, and two
months after ending his loan spell he returned to the club on a free transfer.
This was a big signing for the club, one which would not only show the club
they meant business, but also aid the return to Division Two.
Moss' experience will be key this season as Bournemouth look to settle back
into Division Two football. Moss has the makings of a great goalkeeper, and
many believe he could still do a good job in the Premiership. He's a great
shot stopper, he commands his penalty area well and he is a model professional
off the pitch. Bournemouth fans were delighted with his signing in February
2003, and the Cherries defence will be pleased that the return to the Second
Division with one of the best goalkeepers around behind them.
